The Age of Barbarian comic launches via Patreon, Zehra Ömeroğlu wins the Courage in Cartooning Award, and Heavy Metal Magazine takes on an Angry Mob. Read more in Post Rendered’s news roundup for May 2025.

Cartoonist Zehra Ömeroğlu chosen for Robert Russell Courage in Cartooning Award

The Robert Russell Courage in Cartooning Award recognizes “the world’s bravest cartoonists facing threats to their freedom of expression.” This year’s recipient, Turkish cartoonist Zehra Ömeroğlu, is being recognized in light of the highly partisan reaction garnered by her work which, Cartoonist Rights Executive Director Terry Anderson states, “is based wholly on her gender; the same cartoon, in the same space and at the same time with a male byline simply would not have attracted the same (over)reaction from state censors.”

Anderson continues that Ömeroğlu’s story is set to be told in an autobiographical graphic novel.

Heavy Metal Magazine responds to Angry Mob

Heavy Metal Magazine’s successful relaunch this month garnered criticism when backers of the Kickstarter campaign began complaining that their local comic books shops were receiving the magazine before they had. The Heavy Metal Team responded promptly with an apology, stating that they were working to get backer orders shipped. Furthermore, they acknowledged the anger expressed directly, stating that they would be starting an exclusive club for backers called The Angry Mob.

Angry Mob perks include an invite to a Circle group which will host sneak peaks at future issues. Furthermore, a voucher for use in the online shop, early access to new merchandise, a discount on annual subscriptions, and a free limited “We F*cked Up” edition of issue #2 are set to be given to members of the Angry Mob.

License to Offend exhibition cancelled at the last minute

Down The Tubes reported that, somewhat ironically, an exhibition dedicated to political cartoonists titled “License to Offend” was cancelled.

The exhibition was reportedly shut down just hours before a private viewing was scheduled to take place at the Kingston Riverside. Event organizers Paul Mowatt and Zoe Dorelli have been left looking for a new venue, stating, “Unfortunately, the venue hadn’t factored in the fact that all the cartoonists work for national newspapers. It’s very unwise to annoy a cartoonist.”

Post Rendered Recommends: Age of Barbarian comic

Crian Soft, makers of the Age of Barbarian game series, have relaunched their Patreon around a new, ongoing Age of Barbarian comic book. For the $5 per month pledge, supporters receive 1-2 comic pages per month, along with exclusive artwork.

The Age of Barbarian comic is composed of rendered images. It takes place in the city of Skar-Am, the setting for the upcoming Age of Barbarian: Chronicles video game. Back in 2021, Post Rendered interviewed Christian Fanucci of Crian Soft about the launch of his Patreon, and even floated the idea of an Age of Barbarian comic. We’re glad to see Fannuci’s amazing render art on the page!
