Alien Books turn to Kickstarter for next round of Juan Giménez books

After soliciting a new reprint of Juan Giménez’s Gangrene (aka Garbage) last year, Alien Books appears to have changed plans for their Giménez library, starting a Kickstarter for several English hardcover editions of the artist’s work.

The Sci-Fi Worlds of Juan Giménez Graphic Novel Box Set is set to contain Black Star (originally printed in English, softcover early last year), Gangrene, War III, and Mutant. The box set will only be available to backers, and retail stores who back the campaign, though Alien Books notes that softcover editions of the books will also be released at a later date. As of this writing, the campaign is set to close having acquired almost $190, 000 CAD of its $6972 CAD goal. The set is due to ship in mid 2026.

Frazetta’s Man Ape sells at Heritage Auctions

DownTheTubes reported that Frank Frazetta’s iconic painting Man Ape (1967) sold for over 13.5 million this month, with Heritage Auctions stating about the significance of the sale, “That is more than twice the next-highest auction result for any Frazetta work and any Comic or Fantasy artwork globally.”

Frazetta’s work played a monumental role in repopularizing Robert E. Howard’s character during the 1960s, when Lancer/Ace began reprinting the stories, using Frazetta’s artwork for their covers. Man Ape was originally used for the fifth volume in the series, depicting a scene from the story Rogues in the House (1934).

The work was painted with oil on canvas, stands at 16 inches by 20 inches, and is signed and dated November 1967.

Rosalyn Drexler passes away

Artist, writer (and wrestler) Rosalyn Drexler passed away this month, reported ArtNews.

Drexler was associated with the Pop art movement of the 1960s. ArtNews compared her to other prominent members of the movement, citing, “Like Andy Warhol and James Rosenquist, she painted Marilyn Monroe and other actors who appeared regularly in the movies. Like Roy Lichtenstein, she displayed a zest for commercial imagery and the bright hues of advertising. Like Marisol, she seemed to express a concern for how the media encouraged violence upon women.”

Despite her 1972 book To Smithereens garnering critical acclaim, and her work being featured in Tate Modern’s 2015 “The World Goes Pop”, Drexler worked in many facets besides art, not becoming the household name that others in the movement did. She was 98.

Post Rendered Recommends: Lézards rêveurs

DownTheTubes reported that a new book compiling work from Jean Giraud’s private journals has launched.

Lézards rêveurs contains drawings done by the artist over a three year period in the mid 1990s, many of which have never been seen before. Giraud used these journals for both life drawing and imaginative work, as well as to write notes, and even craft poetry.

The book is available through Book Palace Books in the United Kingdom. No word on an international release as of yet.
