French branch of Humanoids enters liquidation

After the launch of the English edition of Métal Hurlant last month, the French branch of Humanoids has been placed into “judicial liquidation”. Bleeding Cool reported that the publication’s owner, Fabrice Giger, told employees on June 26th that salaries would not be paid and a restructuring would be taking place.

The publisher has up to issue #16 of the new, French edition, of Métal Hurlant listed on their website as of this posting.

On July 21, a newsletter from the English branch of the company was sent out promoting several upcoming Kickstarter projects. These projects include new works COSMOPIRATES by Woods and Jodorowsky and THE CHASM OF RESURRECTION by Rodríguez and Hirodjee. New English editions of classic books, including Crespin’s Armalite 16, were also listed in the newsletter.

Original Apple 1 unit sold by Sotheby’s

Sotheby’s sold an Apple 1 computer, handmade by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, during their Geek History Week sale on July 2, 2025.

The Apple 1 for auction was described as the “finest operational” unit in existence. Assembled in 1976, it is one of the first 50 units ever made. Vice Chairman and Global Head of Science & Natural History Cassandra Hatton stated that after selling the first 50 units, Jobs and Wozniak used the money to purchase another 200 boards, meaning there were only 250 units of this original build made. Hatton states that not only is this unit fully operational, but due to the lack of paint flaking is also one of the finest preserved.

Phillips to introduce new bidding structure

ArtNews reported that the auction house Phillips will be debuting a new bidding structure this fall. The new structure was summarized as follows:

A binding written bid must be placed at least 48 hours before the auction’s start time and must be equal to or greater than the lot’s published low estimate. According to Phillips, the winning priority bid will benefit from a “significantly lower” buyer’s premium rate.

This change accompanies new rates for buyer’s premiums in New York, as well as their operations in London, Hong Kong, Geneva, and Paris. Art advisor Dan Jensen commented on the changes, stating that it gave a slight advantage to the auction house while making strategic buying more difficult. However, ultimately it will likely only affect moderately priced lots, “as usually the top lots have guarantees.”
